15 January 2017 – Amusements

One friend complained to another, “All my husband and I do anymore is fight. I’ve been so upset, I’ve lost 20 pounds.”

“If it’s that bad, why don’t you just leave him?” asked the second friend.

“I’m seriously considering it, but I’d like to lose another 15 pounds first.” Continue reading “15 January 2017 – Amusements”

Happy New Year (again). Hope your celebrations were as enjoyable as ours and that your resolutions lasted longer than mine!

As most of you know, Penelope and I tend to celebrate New Year’s Eve when it gets to be midnight in Moscow or, at the very latest, Paris. We’re generally soundly snoring by the time midnight arrives in the UK. It’s been many, many years since we were out on the tiles on New Year’s Eve but this year we dragged ourselves out and partied like it was 1999!

I picked it up largely because it sounded like the sort of book I would have enjoyed sharing with my father – a mixture of interesting history dressed up in fanciful fiction.

18 December 2016 – Amusements

When I stepped on the scale at my doctor’s office, I was surprised to see that I weighed 144 pounds.

“Why don’t you just take off that last four?” I joked to the nurse’s aide as she made a notation on my chart.

A few moments later, my doctor came in and flipped through the chart.

“I see you’ve lost weight,” he said. “You’re down to… 14 pounds???”
