29 March 2026

It’s been a pretty meh kind of week – the weather wasn’t great but it wasn’t terrible – a bit of rain, a bit of sun, some cold days, some not so cold days. And, to continue in that vein, our week has been pretty meh as well. Dropped the campervan over for its annual service and inspection, had a visit from the plumber to resolve a couple of relatively minor issues and collected the van again. Wow! The excitement has been positively underwhelming.

The big news, of course, is that Ben, Brex-Anna and Max arrived yesterday for a visit and the whole famn damily is arriving later today for a Sunday lunch which, I have no doubt, will be sensational.

Of course, in order to get ready for Ben et sa famille, someone has been working their socks off while someone else has made the occasional pseudo-encouraging comments. No prizes for guessing which was which.

Naturally, the impending arrival meant that the garden had to be awakened from its winter slumber and made to look half presentable, a task that took the head gardener no more than a couple of days. Meanwhile, at least one bedroom needed to be completely redecorated. All I could do was admire the whirling dervish which swept through unhindered and achieved miracles.

As part of the process of preparing the garden, the head gardener instructed me to construct the structure pictured below. It’s just under 3 foot in each direction and is covered with fine mesh. Although it’s not clear in the photo but the bottom is also covered with mesh. This has been placed somewhere in the garden and your task is to guess (a) what’s its purpose and (b) where in the garden one might feel the need to put such a structure.

Answers on the back of a postcard. The answer will be revealed next week (assuming that I remember).

Hope we’ll have a bit more news next time.

And finally . . .

Meanwhile, keep breathing, keep happy, keep smiling, keep exercising, be good, be careful, and keep safe. And, be gentle to wasps and bees – we need all the pollinators we can get. And, hold your loved ones close.

Lots of love to you all,

Greg

  1. Re the mysterious structure – stymied! You’ve clearly concluded it’s best to go along with my sister’s mad ideas – probably best course.
