9 October 2022 – Amusements

Bubba and Junior were standing at the base of a flagpole, looking up. A blonde lady walked by and asked what they were doing.

“We’re supposed to find the height of the flagpole,” said Bubba, “but we don’t have a ladder.”

The woman took a wrench from her purse, loosened a few bolts, and laid the pole down. Then she took a tape measure from her pocket, took a measurement & announced, “Eighteen feet, six inches,” and walked away.

Junior shook his head and laughed. “Ain’t that just like a dumb blond? We ask for the height, and she gives us the length.”

This week we have mainly been enjoying the company of my sister Sallie and her husband Rod who are visiting from Utah by way of Croatia and Switzerland. It’s always lovely when they visit and it gets us out and about to sites old and new.

2 October 2022 – Amusements

This is truly a heart-warming story about the bond formed between a little girl and some construction workers. This makes you want to believe in the goodness of people and that there is hope for the human race.

A young family moved into a house next door to a vacant lot. One day a construction crew turned up to start building a house on the empty lot. The young family’s 5-year-old daughter naturally took an interest in all the activity going on next door and started talking with the workers. She hung around and eventually the construction crew, all of them gems-in-the-rough, more or less adopted her as a kind of project mascot. They chatted with her, let her sit with them while they had coffee and lunch breaks, and gave her little jobs to do here and there to make her feel important. At the end of the first week they even presented her with a pay envelope containing a dollar.

The little girl took this home to her mother who said all the appropriate words of admiration and suggested that they take the dollar pay she had received to the bank the next day to start a savings account.

When they got to the bank the teller was equally impressed and asked the little girl how she had come by her very own pay check at such a young age.

The little girl proudly replied, “I worked all last week with a crew building a house.”

“My goodness gracious,” said the teller, “and will you be working on the house again this week, too?”

The little girl replied, “I will if those useless sons-a-bitches at Home Depot ever bring us any drywall that’s worth a shit!”

It’s been a good week with some really nice days toward the end. Thursday, Friday and Saturday were glorious. Warm(ish) or at least pleasantly mild with bright blue skies, puffy clouds and a gentle breeze. It does feel a bit autumnal in the mornings and evenings and many of the trees are already showing what passes for colour in these parts (but that could partly be a result of how dry a summer we had). Let’s hope for more of the same.

It’s been a decent enough week – still no rain of any significant amount although we’ve had a few smatterings. The landscape is beginning to green up again and on Thursday I even had to mow the lawns – I think that’s the first time since July!

“What’s the quickest way to Cork?” I asked the Irish farmer.

“Are you walking or driving?” he said.

“Driving,” I replied.

“Yes, that will be the quickest.”

It’s been a mixture of showers and sunny intervals this week – good for the garden and the reservoirs, not much good when it pelts down in a torrent when you’re in the middle of a field walking the dog! The grass is greening up nicely and will soon need a mow, the first since mid-July, I think. I would be a lot happier if it would rain at night and keep dry during the day but I guess that’s too much to ask.

Police in Australia are searching for a group of men seen releasing live crocodiles into a school building. Though, if you ask me, they should probably be searching for the crocodiles.

It’s been a good(ish) week. Still no rain of any significance but, allegedly, we may see some this afternoon. The sun is going down earlier every day and there is the occasional Autumnal feel to some of the evenings and early mornings. I guess it won’t be long before someone asks me to put the central heating on – not sure we can afford it this year.
